Have I got a travel hack for you! Shampoo Bars! Now you may be thinking, “Why would a blog like Millennial Trekkers be writing about a beauty product like shampoo bars?” Let me tell you a little bit about them.
I first found out about shampoo bars when my boyfriend and I were planning our trip to Thailand. I refuse to check bags when I travel which limits the amount of liquids I can take with me…I also refuse to give up my normal ‘beauty routine’. While searching for solid alternatives for some of my liquids I came upon Lush’s Shampoo Bars. I read a few reviews, both positive and negative, and decided to give them a try. If I can save even a little room in that stupid one quart TSA approved bag for liquids I am all in.
I’ve always loved Lush. I first went there to find products to clear my adult acne. Over the years I have found about a million other things I just had to have. I’m sure anyone who has been to Lush can understand.
While at Lush, the woman working the floor helped me go through the pros and cons of each bar, I think she may have spent a good twenty minutes with me. I have fine, blonde hair so I ended up choosing Seanik – a pretty blue bar with bit of seaweed throughout who’s main claim is “flat hair no more!”. The bar itself is $11.95 USD and while that does seem a bit expensive for something roughly the size of a bar of soap, Lush claims you can get up to 80 washes from one bar. I don’t know about 80 washes but the bar I purchased did last close to two months.
I few tips I learned while using a shampoo bar versus the liquid version: First buy the square tin rather than the round tin. The bar can sometimes get wedged and stuck in the round tin. You can also find other storage solutions but I found the tin works great to also protect the bar while traveling. Second, make sure to keep the bar out of direct water. This will keep the bar solid and firm and it will last much longer. Finally, always let the bar stand upright or tilted in the tin to let it dry after use. This will keep it from sticking to the surface and breaking.
Overall, I would give these bars two thumbs up! They are a great alternative to a liquid product and I haven’t felt that I am skimping on a step in my hair care routine.
As Dwight Schrute once stated, “Before I do anything I ask myself, ‘Would an idiot do that?’ And if they would, I do not do that thing”. I think Dwight would most definitely take a shampoo bar with him if he decided to travel anywhere.
Keep Trekkin’!
